Colombo, Pratr. Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa wants to investigate more than 20 thousand people who went missing during the civil war. The President's Office issued this clarification on Wednesday following Rajapaksa's statement that he said the missing people had died.

Three decades of civil war between rebels and government

Sri Lanka had a civil war for nearly three decades between the Tamil rebels and the government. The war came to an end in 2009 after heavy military action. The command of this action was in the hands of the current President and the then Defense Minister Gotabaya. He was also charged with serious charges like war crimes. About one lakh people were killed in this civil war.

Rajapaksa had earlier said that people were dying

Gotbaya recently said during a meeting with United Nations Resident Coordinator Hana Singer that steps would be taken to issue death certificates to their families after necessary investigations into the missing people. The President's office said Rajapaksa had told a UN official that he wanted to investigate the matter. He said that those who died in this battle cannot be brought back.
