A Friend of the Family Season 2 Storyline:

Currently, what we can gather from the series’ official synopsis is as follows: “A Friend of the Family: True Evil, the documentary companion to Peacock’s common planned series, is the narrative of Jan Broberg, who endured years of sexual assault as a child at the hands of family friend and neighbor Robert Berchtold.

NBC News correspondent Andrea Canning conducted in-depth interviews with Jan and her family to uncover how Berchtold sneakily and methodically manipulated his way into Jan’s life, exploited her, and blackmailed both of her parents before convincing her that aliens would kill her and her sisters if she didn’t comply with his demands.

A fellow victim of Berchtold’s abuse opens out to Jan about her own experiences just as Jan is beginning to face the trauma that has formed her.

This tale of betrayal and cruelty is transformed by Jan’s trip into a stirring account of fortitude and the life-affirming love shared by a family.

The addition of aliens to a narrative of drug use, extortion, and steamy secrets between parents from two devoutly religious households is unsettling on its own.

Learn how one charismatic, magnetic, and charming man became somewhat too at ease with his newly acquired circle of friends and succeeded in persuading their daughter that alarming falsehoods were true in A Friend of the Family, the true-crime narrative of the strange relationship between the Broberg and Berchtold families.

In the early 1970s, Bob Broberg went to seek employment at his flower store, while Mary Ann remained at home to take care of the family’s three children, Susan, Karen, and Jan.

They met the Berchtolds, newcomers to town, during church one Sunday and became fast friends.

The two families, totaling eight children, hit it off immediately and spent the next few years commuting, eating meals together, and taking trips together.

After some time, Robert Berchtold, the patriarch of the Berchtold family, had a hidden love relationship with Mary Ann Broberg.

Soon after, something more than just friendship blossomed between Robert and Bob in the front seats of the family’s aging Chevrolet.

When 12-year-old Jan disappeared for 35 days while out horseback riding with Robert, the family’s secrets escalated from shocking to unbelievable.

Jan drifted out and in of a drug-induced coma in the Berchtolds’ motorhome for the first week.

She claims that alien voices from a box informed her that she was half extraterrestrial and that she needed to have Robert’s kid before she was sixteen in order to prevent the destruction of her home planet.

Whilst the FBI and the Broberg family looked for their missing daughter, Robert and Jan, then 12 years old, eloped to Mexico and were married in a hotel while completing their heavenly, extraterrestrial mission.

The FBI finally manages to track an email to their hotel after 35 days. Even after Jan is saved and Robert is taken into custody, their goal and the Brobergs’ woes are far from over. Refusing to share the information she received from the “aliens” with her loved ones or the FBI, Jan instead clings to the belief that she is in a romantic relationship with Robert, who, for some reason, keeps playing the cassette tapes of Zethra and Zeda in her bedroom.

Robert’s family blackmails the Brobergs by threatening to reveal their tight-knit religious community and the church about their infidelity if they don’t withdraw the allegations against him before his trial.

While the FBI and the Broberg family have a good idea of where to seek for Jan now that the charges have been dismissed, Robert looks to be cooperative and fully on his own this time around.

A Friend of the Family will shock you with the depths to which individuals will go to satisfy their lusts and maintain their reputations.

A Friend of the Family Season 2 Review:

The fact that I feel both uneasy and angry about this situation suggests that the film was effective in its attempt to make me feel something.

Although predictable given the narrative, the brainwashing and psychology presented are offensive and disturbing nevertheless.

It’s clear manipulation determined by power and deceit soothes the public to enable the unimaginable to occur; this is so dreadful and nasty, and that this generation has secrets buried behind closed doors.

The performances are superb. The screenplay and the direction are both superb. Excellent work, and I think everyone should see it; let’s keep our fingers crossed that, as a society, we can finally shake off this haze of superstition.

I congratulate the main victim for allowing the tale to be shared, and I hope the victim(s) do not suffer consequences as a result of part of the truth being disclosed.
