During the test, Gon meets and befriends three other candidates: Kurapika, the last survivor of the Kurta clan, who wants to become a Hunter so he can get revenge on the Phantom Troupe and get back his clan’s scarlet-glowing eyes; Leorio, a future doctor who wants to use the Hunters’ financial benefits in order to pay for medical school; and Killua Zoldyck, a twelve-year-old boy who left behind his life as an assassin for the sake of a renowned crime family.

Leorio and Kurapika temporarily leave after Gon and the others persuade Killua to return to their side.
