Ballerina Release Date, Cast, Plot, and Everything You Need to Know
The action genre was on life support for a long time, with a long list of forgettable, CGI-filled schlock that felt too disposable. Gone have been the glory days begun by franchises such as Die Hard and Rambo. Instead, fans of the genre got giant robot fights as well as superhero movies, which aren’t always bad but feel too similar.
Then, all of sudden, out of nowhere, a bright light appeared in the year. An action movie that was so good, so real, and so instantly recognizable that it earned the right to be called the best new action movie in years and a movie that would change this same action genre for good.
The “John Wick” series has become one of the most popular action movie franchises. It gave Keanu Reeves a new lease on life and set the tone for films like “Atomic Blonde,” “Nobody,” as well as “Day Shift.”
That shouldn’t be a surprise, because the “John Wick” series contains some of the finest action scenes of the last few decades. However, this assassin series is about a lot more than just fighting.
The “John Wick” movies have got to add new and interesting parts to the complex criminal underworld that the first one hinted at. So as the Wick Cinematic Universe had also grown, so has the group of interesting characters that surround Keanu Reeves’ main character.
Fans have wanted to know more about many of them, especially the ballerina assassins who were only seen briefly in a key scene in the third movie.
Ballerina is a spin-off of John Wick that will bring Ana de Armas into the world of killers. The spin-off is said to show a lot more about the world of assassins than the John Wick movies did.
In John Wick’s Chapter 3: Parabellum, we saw a little bit of how assassins are trained. This is what the movie will be about. If you remember, in that scene, all of the girls in this theatre were dancing ballet. So, even though the girls have come to learn how to be killers, they are still taught ballet.
This fact is important because it tells us what the title of the spin-off is: Ballerina. A person who dances ballet. The character played by Armas will leave this training camp and kill a lot of people. Hopefully, no one will kill her dog or cat, because she is a cat person.
We don’t know anything about the plot of the spin-off, so we don’t know what it will show. But Keanu Reeves’s recent comments might give us a clue. Reeves was on CCXP, and when someone asked him about the spin-off, he told all.
Ballerina Release Date
The “John Wick” universe keeps getting bigger. Everyone’s favorite killer and dog lover will be in his fourth movie, which will come out on March 24, 2023. Also in 2023, Peacock will air a prequel series about the famous Continental hotel. Even a new “John Wick” video game has been talked about. So, shortly, we can look forward to a lot of Wick-related content, including the much-anticipated spin-off “Ballerina.”
Ballerina Cast
Ana De Armas plays the title role in the spin-off that focuses on women. In John Wick: Chapter 3: Parabellum, the American belly dancer Unity Phelan played her character, Ballerina (2019).
Ana was most recently seen in Blonde, a movie about the career and life of leading lady Marilyn Monroe based on real events but told in a fictional way. The movie got mixed reviews, but Ana’s role as the late Hollywood star was praised by everyone.
Also, Ana is getting ready for her next movie, Ghosted, which stars Chris Evans and is a romantic action-adventure film. Along with her, the world-famous actor Keanu Reeves, who played the title role (John Wick/Jardani Jovonovich) in the John Wick series and won a lot of praise for it, is likely to make a strong appearance in Ballerina.
Reeves is getting ready for John Wick: Chapter 4, which is the fourth movie in the series. His most recent movie is The Matrix Resurrections, which is a sci-fi action movie. In addition to Reeves, Ian MacShane will return to a franchise as the mysterious owner of a Continent Hotel, Winston Scott.

Ballerina Plot
The official synopsis for Ballerina says, “A young female executioner seeks vengeance against the individuals who murdered her family.” This doesn’t give us much to go on. Whilst also promoting John Wick: Chapter 4 at CCXP 2022, Keanu Reeves gave us a little more information:
“She is a woman who has been through a lot of hard things and wants to get even. That whoever died her- someone murdered her father. Who might it be? So, it’s her journey to figure out what happened in her past.
She lost her dad when she was young, and she isn’t sure what happened. Only that someone broke inside and murdered her father, with a tattoo on his arm. And we know from John Wick that something is up if a character has a tattoo.”
Reeves also said that the movie will take place between John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum as well as John Wick: Chapter 4. If the idea of ballerina assassins sounds familiar, it’s because we saw a brief glimpse of them during Chapter 3, when John asked The Director, a mysterious figure from his past, for help (Anjelica Huston). As usual in the world of John Wick, nothing is what it seems.
This isn’t just a ballet school; it’s a disguise to train skilled killers for a variety of criminal organizations. Reeves’s statement also sounds like there will be some kind of murder mystery going on, with the main character, Rooney, played by Ana de Armas, trying to figure out who did this.
Maybe this has something to do with the High Table killing her peers and the Director in the middle of Chapter 3, however, the fact that her father died makes it harder to figure out who the killer could be.
So, what do humans know about “Ballerina’s” story? Well, the latest headlines from Deadline as well as Variety say that the movie will be about revenge, the same thing that drives John Wick. Clearly, the main character, a woman, will want to kill the individuals who murdered her family.
Even so, that’s not a lot of information. But if humans look at reports from a little further in time, we might be able to learn about the plot. In September 2017, the website Script Shadow looked at the first screenplay by Shay Hatten (which was written as a standalone feature before becoming part of the “John Wick” universe).
In this variant of the script, the main character is an orphan named Rooney Brown. He is trained as a govt assassin and begins working for a secret government agency. She soon has to deal with the city of Sunnyvale, which is in the Swiss Alps and is full of killers. And before these killers can kill her, she plans to go to their village and kill everyone there.
“Ballerina” is called an action-thriller because it’s about a dancer-turned-assassin who sets out to get revenge on the hired killer who killed her family. But even though it sounds like a pretty standard setup for a movie about just a female assassin, this same keep hoping is that “Ballerina” will have world-building and action as good as (or almost as good as) the main “John Wick” movies.
The “Ballerina” spin-off will, of course, have cameos from “John Wick” actors as well as locations, but (with a little luck) not so many that they take away from the story of the main character.
After all, one of the things that makes the very first “John Wick” movie so good is that it stays focused on John as well as his journey, building the world to support his arc instead of the other way around. When it comes to these kinds of shared universe movies, this is easier said than done, so let’s hope “Ballerina” is up to the challenge.
