The coronavirus has revealed the best and worst of people throughout the pandemic in Mexico. Among the various obstacles that the population, health personnel and authorities have had to face because of COVID-19, the country has had to learn a good number of lessons.
During the evening conference of COVID-19 that is daily led by the Undersecretary for Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López-Gatell, some of the most important lessons left after almost three months of the arrival of the pandemic.
He said that one of the most important is scientific management with a perspective of global solidarity that will be reflected in world history to recognize the effective actions of a government in the face of such a health crisis.
Also, he noted how border closings and flight cancellations were only effective in very specific circumstances as when implemented in the source of origin “in contrast, that in each country closes borders and fragments global solidarity. Crisis management has been shown to be less effective, ”he assured.
Although he indicated that it is too early to point out what could be learned from this pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) does consider the existence of an examination committee, formed by a group of experts, is responsible for gathering evidence about the actions of the countries during the contingencythat is, the way in which they used their means of action and response in the emergency.
In Mexico he assured that these were:
(...) disposition of political leadership of the epidemic that from the beginning was managed on a technical basis, in the hands of experts are the fundamental decisions. In contrast to a large number of countries, (the president) made a formal decision, he put them out to his counterparts in various forums, such as the G20, has sustained and maintains it
He also recalled that in 2009 he was interviewed by said WHO committee about the crisis that Mexico lived, along with Canada and the United States, thanks to influenza.
Two days ago, the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced that he had received an invitation for the undersecretary to form part of a committee of international experts of the United Nations (UN). To which López-Gatell replied:
For me it is an enormous privilege, a distinction, I have absolute respect for the World Health Organization and I would certainly gladly accept once the consent of the Mexican government is formalized
The body to which you were invited is the one in charge of making the International Health Regulations, a legal document circulating for all the member states of the WHO and that in its current version of 2005, which establishes the changes in surveillance, prevention, control, response, preparedness, recovery practices, among other.
Despite the great news, the country continues to increase in infections and deaths from COVID-19. On day 63 of the implementation of the National Day of Healthy Distance, the country registered 68,620 accumulated confirmed cases and 7,394 deaths.
Only 6 days are left to complete the compulsory day and although the authorities assure that the preventive measures will continue and the red light will not be lifted, many of the important cities of the country already show a significant increase in mobility.
