Danish political drama Borgen was created and is produced by Adam Price, Jeppe Gjervig Gram, and Tobias Lindholm. Danish Broadcasting Corporation, the same organization that produced The Killing, now produces Borgen.
In the documentary, Sidse Babett Knudsen plays the little, centrist politician Birgitte Nyborg Christensen, who defied all expectations to become Denmark’s first female prime minister.
There were four seasons with between eight and 10 episodes each. Sidse Babett Knudsen’s portrayal of Birgitte Nyborg, a centrist politician, mother, & problematic wife, continues to carry over from the previous seasons of Borgen. Sidse, a Danish actress, later appeared in Roadkill, Ted Lasso, Inferno, and Westworld.
Knudsen needed some convincing to go back: “We talked about it occasionally,” she admits. We both decided that we had a great run, but let’s just call it a day until a new idea comes to mind. I met with Adam Price.

When a drilling firm unexpectedly finds oil in Greenland, Birgitte Nyborg is the recently appointed minister of international affairs. In spite of Denmark’s “big brother” relationship with Greenland, this event ushers in a global struggle for polar dominance, one in which the otherwise seasoned politician Nyborg is forced to accept time and time again that Denmark is the underdog—and a somewhat unruly one—among the world’s superpowers.
As Birgitte Hjort Srensen’s former director of press, Katrine Fnsmark is now back in journalism and serving as the head of the latest information department at a major national television station. This fourth season also focuses more closely on Katrine.
