Interviewed by Digital Spy to talk about the upcoming release of Blithe Spirit, a comedy that will see him starring alongside Isla Fisher, Leslie Mann and Judi Dench, Dan Stevens responded to the many fans curious to know if he will ever reprise his role in Downton Abbey.
Interpreter of Matthew Crawley in the first three seasons of the British series, the actor turned out to be "slightly surprised" by the amount of people who ask him if he will appear in the next Downton Abbey movie despite what happened to his character during the 2014 Christmas special.
"I left the show eight years ago. Executives who work in film - people who should know more, ask me, 'Are you in the movie?'. I say, 'Did you see the show? Do you know how it ended?'" Stevens joked. "They still hope that I will appear in a shower scene or somehow."
"I'm incredibly grateful for everything that role and that series have given me." he added. "I've also learned to put my faith in luck, I guess, and follow the instinct and advice of the good people around me. So I'll continue to follow that path."
After the success of the first Downton Abbey film, we remember it, the producer Gareth Neame has announced it development of a sequel which, if all goes as planned, will go into production in 2021.
