Production on “Spinal Tap II” is expected to begin in New Orleans in the new year. The project is a continuation of Rob Reiner’s previous work as a feature director, the legendary rock mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap” (1984).
Late February, Rob Reiner told him on the RHLSTP With the Richard Herring podcast, principal filming would begin on the much-anticipated sequel to the famous 1984 mockumentary, This Is Spinal Tap.
The original cast members Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer will be joined in the film by real-life rock luminaries Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Garth Brooks, according to him. Below, you may listen to the whole interview between Reiner and Richard Herring.

In an effort to celebrate the first film’s 40th anniversary, Reiner was hoping to broadcast Spinal Tap II around March 19, 2024. But the months-long Hollywood strikes pushed back the start of filming. According to Variety, the studio has not yet revealed a revised release date.

Rob Reiner’s Spinal Tap II (2024) Storyline:
Based on what Rob Reiner has said so far, This Is Spinal Tap 2 could be structured as a concert film, like Martin Scorsese’s The Last Waltz. The premise is that Spinal Tap owe Ian Faith, the band’s manager, one more show after he died, and that his wife has acquired a contract specifying this.
After the band members were dissatisfied with how they were portrayed in This Is Spinal Tap, Marty DiBergi got the opportunity to record their last performance while Spinal Tap was reforming to escape lawsuits.
Martin “Marty” Di Bergi, a filmmaker, is documenting the 1982 U.S. tour of English rock band Spinal Tap in support of their new record Smell the Glove.
On vocals and guitar, the band’s gifted but naive and dimwitted boyhood pals Nigel Tufnel and David St. Hubbins are joined by Derek Smalls on bass, Viv Savage on keyboards, and Mick Shrimpton on drums.
Their early days were spent as the skiffle group The Originals, but they changed their name to the New Originals when they found out another band was called The Originals.
They changed it back after the original Originals band split up, as seen in the documentary. They went on to have success as the Thamesmen with the single “Gimme Some Money.”
After rebranding as Spinal Tap, they had a little success with the flower power song “Listen to the Flower People.” Finally, they made the switch to heavy metal.
Strange deaths befell many of their former drummers: Peter “James” Bond exploded on stage, John “Stumpy” Pepys died in a “bizarre gardening accident,” which the authorities deemed best left unexplained, and Eric “Stumpy Joe” Childs choked to death on someone else’s vomit.
Nigel shows Marty his sizable collection of guitars and a hand-built amplifier with eleven volume settings, which, in Nigel’s opinion, makes the guitars sound “one louder” than standard amplifiers.
