COVID-19 in Mexico: the number of deaths rose to 7,179 while positive cases broke

This Saturday, May 23 Mexico reached a new record of infections, because from yesterday to today, 3,329 new cases were confirmed, of which 906 are active, leaving a total figure of 65,856.

In addition, 7,179 deaths were recorded and 14,253 active infections of COVID-19, reported the general director of Epidemiology, José Luis Alomía Zegarra.

The official also said that there are 118,137 negative cases and 31,663 are suspected, out of a total of 215,656 tests carried out to this day in Mexico.

The Mexico City, Baja California and the State of Mexico continue to head the list of entities with the highest number of infections and deaths from SARS-CoV-2. On the contrary, Colima, Durango, and Zacatecas, are the three with the least number of accumulated infections.

On the other hand, Tabasco entered the list of entities with more than 3,000 cases of registered infections, so it is now positioned behind Baja California, which has 4,097.

This day there 718 suspicious deaths, 96 less than those registered yesterday, which could add to the total number of deaths from COVID-19 when the results are provided.

Regarding the availability of single and ventilated beds, the official noted that all states have sufficient space, even the capital and Edomex, entities that concentrate the majority of contagions due to coronavirus.

For his part, the undersecretary of Health, Hugo López-Gatell, recalled that next Saturday May 30 ends the National Sana Distancia Day. He pointed out that it is important that citizens are aware that this is not a discriminated opening, but that it will be staggered and under sanitary protocols.

He warned that from June 1 begins the phase called "new normal", made up of a series of measures that may or may not be carried out in public spaces.

The official acknowledged that when more mobility begins, infections will rebound, but that, under the conditions of the pandemic, it will be normal and should be treated with care.

Gatell recalled the experience of other countries in the face of the pandemic, noting that they too have had flare-ups when reopening activities, however, confinement cannot be maintained forever, so Mexico must prepare ahead of time for this scenario.

That way, exhorted citizens to stay home during the last days of the National Day of Sana Distancia, and once finished, avoid public spaces, since there will still be a risk of getting it.

The traffic light has four colors: red, orange, yellow and green, in addition to five categories, which represent activities such as: public and work health measures; essential and non-essential labor; public spaces; vulnerable people and schoolchildren.

Meanwhile, the Mexicans who have passed away in the United States because of COVID-19 they already added 1,036, according to data from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), which also disclosed that NY is the entity with the highest number of deaths with 671.
