The first season finished with Kate and Tully fighting, and Kate told her best friend not to go to her father’s funeral. The reason for the fight was finally revealed in the second season.
Marah, Kate’s daughter, was in Tully’s care, and he let her go out while she was assumed to be home. After a kid at a frat party went too far, Marah asked Tully, who had been drinking, to pick her up. On the way home, another car crashed into theirs, sending them both to the hospital.
Even though the accident wasn’t Tully’s fault and neither of them was seriously hurt, Kate is still upset, which is why they have a big fight.
Even though Kate turned down Tully’s attempts to break up with her at first, Part 1 ends with her showing up at Tully’s condo after finding out she has Stage III cancer, just to find that Tully has only just left for work in Antarctica.
Fans are now beginning to wonder what Kate’s diagnosis means for her and if she and Tully ever become friends again. Since the show has been based on a book, humans have the response for you.
Kate finds out that her cancer is terminal, which is a very sad turn of events. When Tully hears the news, she hurries back home to Kate. Before Kate dies, she and Tully fix their friendship. While you are at it, Netflix, just start tearing our hearts and soul out of our chests.
Hannah’s second book, Fly Away, looks at how Kate’s death affects Tully, Johnny, and Marah. It would make an excellent third season, but Chalke has said that the exhibition was never meant to go beyond the first book or the second season.
She told Deadline, “This story arc has always been Maggie’s idea.” The arc follows the plotline of the book, but it also goes in some completely new directions.
“That was the plan, so we could figure out the number of episodes it would take to tell the whole story. It was the end of their journey. They didn’t have to wait to see if they’d be picked up, and the story didn’t end halfway through.
“What could have broken up Tully and Kate’s close friendship of thirty years? They were our “Firefly Lane Girls Forever.” This season, we’ll find out the answer, but first, Kate has to deal with the excruciating aftermath of Johnny’s disastrous trip to Iraq, whilst also Tully is sued for leaving her talk show and has to start her professional life from the bottom.
“This makes her want to find out what she is and what other she came from, even if it means going against the wishes of her top-secret hippie mother, Cloud, and looking for the father Helen never knew.
“We see Kate, as well as Johnny, fall in love for the first time in the 1980s. This causes a lot of trouble in the news department where they both work, as Tully’s career goes up and she fights (and flirts!) such as cocky sports broadcaster Danny Diaz. She may have found her perfect match, but only if they can stop fighting for five minutes.
