Haunted Mansion ( Movie 2023) Storyline:
The story of a widow (Rosario Dawson) & her son (Chase Dillon) who hire a ragtag group of purported spiritual experts to assist purge their house of ghostly intruders is told in the movie Haunted Mansion, which was inspired by the iconic theme park attraction.
For those who are unfamiliar, the Haunted Mansion ride debuted in 1969 at Disneyland before appearing at four more Disney resorts. The theme park experience transports visitors in Doom Buggies throughout a spooky home with New Orleans-inspired spectacular effects that give thrills and pure entertainment. When Haunted Mansion was first announced in 2010, Guillermo del Toro was originally contracted to write and produce the film. But when the director presented his screenplay in 2013, it was rejected because it was too spooky, so Katie Dippold, the author of Ghostbusters, was hired to create a new one.
Early alterations to the screenplay for Haunted Mansion indicate that, like Eddie Murphy’s version, Disney wants the film to be family-friendly notwithstanding its gothic visuals.
The official narrative of the film states that it will center on a single mother called Gabbie and her 9-year-old kid who, unknown to them, relocate into a haunted house in New Orleans.
Most additional information about the themes and storylines of the film is still under wraps. They soon turn to a historian, a priest, a psychic, & a paranormal investigator for assistance as the terrors from the story’s title, The Haunted Mansion, start to manifest.
The new Haunted Mansion, similar to the Murphy adaptation, adopts a number of distinguishing features from the initial attraction, including the well-known stretching area, as the movie trailer demonstrates. But the film’s director, Jeremy Simien, has hinted that this haunting Mansion would have a number of haunting locales.
Astrophysicist Ben Matthias, who is working on a camera to find dark matter, runs into Alyssa, a ghost tour guide, & is fascinated by her faith in the paranormal. Ben quits his job and carries on with Alyssa’s ghost tour when she perishes in a car accident.
Years later, a single mother named Gabbie moves into Gracey Manor with her son Travis with the intention of turning it into a hotel with a bed and only to discover that it is haunted.
Father Kent, a priest and exorcist, pays Ben a visit and asks him to take pictures of the spirits. Until he gets home and is compelled to go back to the mansion by a phantom Mariner, Ben is first skeptical. Ben discovers that Travis, Kent, and Gabbie must remain at the mansion since they are being haunted as well.
Ben and Kent hire the psychic Harriet and steal the mansion’s plans from Prof. Bruce Davis, an expert in haunted houses. The gang discovers a secret séance chamber, and Harriet is able to communicate with Gracey’s ghost, who gives them instructions to speak with the renowned medium Madame Leota in a written message. A strange force drives Harriet outside of the home when she tries to do so. Soon after Bruce arrives, he starts to experience hauntings.
The party continues to search for Leota’s spirit while remaining in the estate. In the attic, Ben encounters a ghostly bride & discovers a hidden trunk. When they open it up, they discover a crystal ball inside of which is Leota.
According to Leota, William Gracey purchased the mansion and hired Leota to try to communicate with the ghost of his deceased wife Eleanor each night for a full year.
This caused the mansion to fill with hundreds of ghosts, but an evil force managed to trick Gracey into committing suicide and trap Leota inside her crystal ball.
As she tries to astral project herself in search of additional information, Harriet accidentally sends Ben from the his body, where he meets Gracey and the Hatbox Ghost, a malevolent spirit.
Bruce takes Ben the next morning to hire a sketch artist to depict the Hatbox Ghost and determine him as Alistair Crump, a wealthy heir who murdered other socialites as retaliation for his abusive father’s actions and the passing of his biological mother before being decapitated by his rebellious slaves.
Crump continues to secure the mansion, but Travis, Kent, and Ben are able to escape. They discover Crump Manor, which has been turned into a tourist attraction, and hear from the Mariner (who had been following them) that Crump requires someone to freely give up their life and turn into the home’s one thousandth ghost in order to leave the mansion. Travis discovers Crump’s hat, which may be used in a ceremony to send Crump home to the afterlife.
The trio returns to the mansion, where Ben & Kent save Gabbie, Harriet, and Bruce; however, Crump burns the hat and has other intentions for Travis, hoping to exploit his sorrow over losing his father to tempt him to cross over.
As they & Gabbie face Crump in the cemetery, Ben locates Travis and persuades him to release his father. Ben accepts losing Alyssa, Kent persuades the spirits to side with them against Crump, and Bruce gives Harriet a piece of the hat so she may use Leota’s spell to drive Crump away.
Many of the spirits, now in harmony alongside Gabbie & Travis, want to remain in the house. Bruce keeps up his new connections, Harriet regains complete faith in her psychic skills, Kent receives ordainment for becoming a legitimate priest, Ben returns to teaching, and he rescues a stray cat called Tater Tot in honor of his wife’s like for the snack. On Halloween, the gang gets together for a party in the house with the amusing horrors.
