Fans were eager to learn the plot of the film when its title and picture were released. The film’s creators have been tight-lipped about the plot details, only revealing that it is an Indian epic picture with a cast of major actors.
However, the question remains, “Is this a true story?” As the film’s authors and producers have said in several interviews and tweets announcing the film’s release, the film is not based on any true events and is, instead, a science fiction Indian epic.
The plot details of Kalki 2898 AD are few, although a lot can be gained from the trailer and what was shown at the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con. The future depicted in Kalki, 2898 AD, is a dismal one in which oppression reigns.
The Hindu deity Vishnu assumes his ultimate incarnation as Kalki (Prabhas) in a work of literature fight between good and evil as a nameless darkness threatens mankind (Haasan).
In other news pertaining to Kalki 2898 AD, Ashwin discussed the film’s title & Kalki’s part in the tale with The Hollywood Reporter (via Twitter) at the SDCC.
Ashwin likened the plot to the cataclysmic event known in most faiths as the “second coming,” in which a deity or gods come to Earth to rescue mankind. The second incarnation of Vishnu is called Kalki according to one of our legends,” Ashwin said. Kalki is the Hindu concept of the “Second Coming,” or the “Messiah” in other faiths.
Filmmaker Nag Ashwin (who also helmed Mahanati) penned the script for “Kalki 2898 AD.” The announcement of the science fiction movie came on the 50th anniversary of Vyjayanthi Movies. The film was the most costly Indian film ever made, with a colossal budget of Rs 600 crore.
Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, & Kamal Haasan are among the film’s stars. Disha Patani has a significant part as well. Cinematography by Djordje Stojiljkovic, photography by Santhosh Narayanan, & editing by Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao; Telugu and Hindi versions filmed simultaneously.
While we don’t have many specifics about what will happen in Kalki 2898 AD just yet, we do understand that it is going to be a future drama with deep roots in Indian mythology.
The nameless persona played by Prabhas is said to be a future incarnation of Vishnu, the Hindu deity of protection. The avatar’s mission is to reestablish peace on Earth by defeating a fascist regime led by nameless, faceless warriors called Raiders.

The initial January 12, 2024 release date was reportedly left off of the posters for either the peek or the first look. In light of the success of 2018’s Mahanati, there are already whispers of a possible release date of May 9, 2024. However, as of this writing, there was no formal word.
