On August 26, 2017, Floyd Mayweather beat Conor McGregor by a tenth round technical knockout of one of the most anticipated bouts by boxing fans in a long time. That same day the Irishman began a campaign to achieve a rematch that to this day has not been possible. Even though sports activities are mostly stopped due to the coronavirus pandemic, the fighter insists on achieving a new face to face with the undefeated champion.
In recent days, McGregor took advantage of a series of compliments that he did Mike Tyson to renew his stance of going for a rematch against Money. In a podcast, Iron Mike highlighted what the Irishman exhibited in that fight of 2017.
"He had never boxed before, had he? He held for ten rounds with the best boxer on earth, with the best in the last hundred years ”Tyson noted on the Hotboxing podcast. He also highlighted the blows that McGregor could connect against a rival of such a category and so many scrolls.
Then, he continued: “Imagine a guy who has never played a boxing match before and has to face me. And it is sustained for ten rounds. That's a damn son of a ..."
These words reached the Irishman's ears and his response was not long. Through social media, he not only reiterated his will to fight Mayweather again, but made an important promise Tyson. "Thanks, Mike. I want you to know that for the inevitable rematch, with the knowledge that I now have about Floyd's style added to the tutelage of my former boxing coach, I'm going to unravel the puzzle and I'm going to beat Floyd. I promise you for my life. It is very good to see you back, ”wrote the fighter who shone in the UFC on his social networks.
At the moment, it looks like McGregor will have to wait since Mayweather had two events planned in 2020 and neither of them was a rematch with the Irishman. Money was originally looking to take on a renowned boxer and then make his big UFC debut. However, the coronavirus pandemic has put his plans on hold.
