According to Deadline, Naomi Ackie, who played Jannah in Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, was cast as the lead in the biopic I Wanna Dance with Somebody, about the singer Whitney Houston, who tragically passed away in 2012. The film, produced by Sony Pictures and TriStar, will be directed by Stella Meghie.
"We have spent most of the last year at the search for an actress who could embody Whitney Houston " said the director. “Naomi Ackie impressed us every step of the way. I was moved by her ability to capture the stage presence of a global icon, also communicating his humanity in his private life. "
I Wanna Dance with Somebody will tell the lights and shadows of Whitney Houston's life and career, from her marriage to Bobby Brown to her problems with narcotics, passing through the successes in the cinema (above all Bodyguard with Kevin Costner). The project is approved by the Houston Estate, which might suggest that darker aspects of the singer's past can be somewhat sweetened.
The screenplay for the film is by Anthony McCarten, who boasts an Oscar nomination for Bohemian Rhapsody and other important experiences such as The Theory of Everything and The Darkest Hour.
