Ovidio Guzmán López, alias “El Ratón”, son of the drug trafficker "El Chapo" Guzmán, who was arrested and later released in Culiacán by the Mexican authorities, does not have an arrest warrant in Mexico, the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection reaffirmed, Alfonso Durazo.
As he stated last February, Durazo said during an interview with the coordinator of National Action, Kuri González, that to persecute the alleged drug trafficker, the Mexican authorities rely on an extradition order to the United States. "(Extradition) is a sufficient legal basis to exercise the apprehension of Ovidio Guzmán"he detailed.
A week ago, the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, recalled the episode of the failed operation to arrest Ovido Guzmán, and reaffirmed that "it was the best", so as not to unleash a war in which more than 200 people had died, according to Army estimates.
“The Army, the Navy, which are helping us, act protecting, respecting human rights. And it is in no way humiliating to avoid violence. I believe that in all cases we must avoid the loss of human life, "said the president.
Ovidio Guzmán is accused in the United States of conspiracy to traffic drugs. In February 2019, the US Department of Justice published an accusation against Ovidio and his brother, Joaquín Guzmán López, alias “El Güero”, for conspiracy to distribute and export cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana to the United States.
"From about April 2008, in Mexico, the United States and other countries, the accused intentionally, knowingly and obstinately, conspired to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine, 500 grams or more of methamphetamine, and 1,000 kilograms or more of marijuana"Says the four-page indictment.
Joaquín and Ovidio would have to be extradited to the American Union, as their father was in February 2017, to be tried for those charges that are accused in a grand jury. The case is assigned to Judge Rudolph Contreras of the District of Columbia in Washington DC.
The descendants of “El Chapo” Guzmán have been identified as the leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel after his father's life sentence The Chapitos have the backing of Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, partner of Guzmán Loera, and considered for decades as the leader in the shadows of the criminal organization.
Chapo's perrogative was for his children to become the heirs of his empire, the Prosecutor's Office said during the trial in New York in 2019.
"El Chapo" had a total of ten children with three different wives, four with the second and some twins with the third. "The Mouse" is the son of the second wife, Griselda López, noted for playing a key role in the escape of Joaquín Guzmán Loera. The third is Emma Coronel, a beauty queen.
