Richard Herd, the veteran actor known for playing the Mr. Wilhelm in the comedy "Seinfeld" and who appeared in critically acclaimed films such as "All the President's Men" and "The China Syndrome," died on Tuesday. He was 87 years old.

After a long battle with cancer, Herd passed away at the Los Angeles home, his wife, actress Patricia Crowder, revealed to the specialized site. The Hollywood Reporter.

During his five-decade career, and in his first recurring role in a television series, portrayed Captain Sheridan, the boss of William Shatner, in the ABC police action drama “T.J. Hooker ”. The Boston native also made a name for himself in the world of science fiction by portraying Supreme Commander John in the miniseries "V, Alien Invasion." of NBC from 1983 and in the three installments of "Star Trek: The Next Generation ”.

When actor Richard Long died in 1974 before filming for Alan J. Pakula's “All the President’s Men,” Herd took his place. In the acclaimed film, he played the former CIA agent who led the team that stormed The Watergate Hotel.

Herd appeared 11 times in three Seinfeld seasons as Wilhelm, the clueless New York Yankees executive who oversees George Costanza (Jason Alexander). The actor himself said he was surprised that he had been chosen for that role.

It appeared years later on the big screen in “F.I.S.T.” (1979), "The Onion Field" (1979), "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" (1987) and "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" (1997).

Herd continued acting at age 80, appearing in "A Christmas in New York" (2016) and "Get Out" (2017) and in series such as "Rizzoli & Isles", "Shameless" and "Hawaii Five-O". He was also a member of the ensemble on the 2012 Betty White’s prank show “Off They Rockers”.

He was also a painter and founding member of The Enterprise Blues Band, made up of "Star Trek" cast members. The group released the albums Enterprise Blues and Intergalactic Roots Music in 2004 and 2005, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
