The number of deaths from coronavirus in Spain remained below one hundred this Wednesday for the fourth consecutive day, although it registered a slight increase until 95, compared to 83 yesterday, reported the Ministry of Health. The number of new infections also increased to 416, from 295 on Tuesday.

With these figures, the total number of deaths from the pandemic in Spain now stands at 27,888, while the number of those infected amounts to 232,555. In addition, there were 31 new admissions in intensive care and 193 hospitalized, reported in a press conference the spokesman of the Ministry of Health for the epidemic, the epidemiologist Fernando Simón.

Despite the increase in deaths, there is an evolution of the epidemic "much better" than previous weeks, valued Simón, who also noted that, of those 416 new cases, 172 started symptoms in the last seven days and have already been detected. He indicated that the rate of decline of the epidemic in Spain is "faster" than in other countries, such as Italy, where it started at least a week earlier.

Simón recognized that the evolution of the last days has not been as fast as before, but now the health system is focused on the early detection of all possible cases. "If, despite doing many more PCR tests, we maintain the descending rate, it means that the transmission is probably somewhat less than previously thought," he explained cautiously.

The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, apologized this Wednesday for the mistakes made in the management of the pandemic and demanded unity to "culminate" the victory against coronavirus. He did so by submitting to another tough debate in Congress, where the Executive asked for support for a new extension of the state of alarm, a legal instrument that allows limits on mobility to stop the pandemic.

"It is the only possible way to effectively combat the virus"Sánchez said during his initial speech, in which he asked political groups to support a new extension of the state of alarm, the fifth since it was declared on March 14, in the expansion of COVID-19.

That extension must be authorized by Congress, and since the progressive coalition government does not have a sufficient majority, must negotiate the support of other parliamentary groups. After Tuesday's agreement with Ciudadanos (liberal), the Spanish government has an easier time approving this extension, although at the beginning of the debate there are still minority, nationalist or regionalist groups that have not indicated their intention to vote.

As protests encouraged by right-wing parties against the government increase in the streets, and hundreds of protesters call for Sánchez's resignation, he called for unity today with the political forces. “We have stopped the virus together, we must end this victory with unity and we must also undertake together the social and economic reconstruction of the country”Sánchez said.

In his speech, He apologized for the "own mistakes" always dictated, he stressed, for the "urgency of the times, the shortage of resources and the exceptional nature and the absence of precedents ”. In addition, he warned everyone of the "irresponsibility" and the "absolute error" that would mean not approving this extension and insisted that "unity is the most powerful force" because "it has saved thousands of lives" and it is necessary to extend it also to " economic and political front ”to also save companies and jobs.

However, the leader of the conservative Popular Party, Pablo Casado, who heads the main opposition group, was very tough in his speech and announced his “no” to the extension, considering that it would be “irresponsible”. The far right party Vox, the third parliamentary force, also announced its negative vote, as it did on previous occasions.
