Michael Chaves, the director of The Conjuring – By Order of the Devil, talks about that reference to The Exorcist and the love for horror cinema that the saga exudes.
The Conjuring – By Order of the Devil, the third chapter of the horror saga produced by Warner Bros., which apparently will open with a tribute to William Friedkin’s famous film, The Exorcist.
“I think The Conjuring movies are always love letters to cinema and horror movies“said director Michael Chaves during an interview with Slash Film, explaining the reasons behind this choice “If you look at the first chapter you can see so much of The Changeling. And I believe it is something that is done with great love. And in this opening scene of By Order of the Devil there is no doubt a cheeky reference to The Exorcist“.
“And you know, it’s funny because I was there to cut it. ” Chaves later revealed “At one point I said to myself ‘Maybe it’s too obvious’. People will say ‘You’re just shamelessly stealing from the greatest horror ever’. But I kept it in the end, and I’m glad I did, because when we started with previews, people loved being able to see these references and make that kind of connection.“
But despite the tributes to the cinema of the past, the new film with Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga will show us something absolutely innovative: “The idea is to take the saga and the Warren to places they have never been, in a completely different direction from the previous ones.“.
As the official synopsis says, The Conjuring: By Order of the Devil “tells a chilling tale of terror, murder and dark evil that has shocked even paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. One of the most sensational cases they have faced begins with the struggle for a boy’s soul, which led the two demonologists to things never seen before, marking the first time in U.S. history that a murder suspect would have claimed the his demonic possession as a defense“.
