The moment the lights go down, a strange voice commands the pair to play. Following a poor response to a question, Shawn receives a fatal arrows to the neck. Morgan makes an effort to flee but is caught.

Lisa (Antoinette Robertson), Allison (Grace Byers), & Dewayne (Dewayne Perkins) arrive to the cabin the next day and talk to King (Melvin Gregg) about inviting Lisa’s unfaithful ex-boyfriend Nnamdi (Sinqua Walls) along for the weekend’s festivities.

Shanika (X Mayo) meets old classmate Clifton (Jermaine Fowler) at the gas stations on her way to the cabin, and he announces he is also joining the gang. The facially deformed clerk (James Preston Rogers), who stands menacingly beside Shanika before she leaves, makes her uneasy.

When everyone has gathered, they discover Ranger White (Diedrich Bader) has barred them from entering. The pals settle their argument and get ready for a night of party.

The gang starts to speculate as to who particularly invited Clifton after games, drinking, and drug use. When their lights go out once again, the pals search for a power box but instead discover The Blackening, a game with pieces that reflect each person’s personality. They hear a voice speaking to them and learn that he is imprisoning Morgan.

In order to rescue Morgan, the voice commands the pals to play a game, and it starts off by quizzing them on African-American knowledge.

Morgan is assaulted because the friends falter in their attempt to adequately respond to a query regarding all the black actors that the appeared as guests on Friends.

They are told to choose the member of their own group who they believe to be “the blackest” and sacrifice them. Each of them offers a different justification, but once Clifton reveals he supported Trump’s candidacy in both races, everyone decides to side with him. When Clifton steps outside, the murderer shoots him in the chest with an arrow.

After being let out of the room, the buddies make an effort to contact Morgan and seek assistance. Although they should know better, they accept Allison’s proposal to separate.

Dewayne must go with Lisa & Nnamdi as she leaves with King and Shanika. The later three eventually come upon Ranger White, who is ready to assist them up until the murderer uses an arrow to shoot him in the neck.

The murderer is encountered by Allison, King, and Shanika, and the group successfully kills him. He is shown to be the clerk that Shanika saw at the gas station when they remove his mask. A second murderer is then encountered by Lisa, Nnamdi, & Dewayne before Lisa blows his head off.

They discover via a search of his pockets because he is the identical twin of the first murderer, and they draw the conclusion that someone paid their homes to be there.

The buddies enter a different room and discover Ranger White and Clifton’s dead, but Clifton suddenly wakes up and confesses to being the mastermind.

He claims that the group was always skeptical of his degree of “blackness” while they were in college together, and that this apprehension contributed to an event in which he was driving while intoxicated and killed a lady.

He planned the whole night as retaliation after spending four years in jail for the DUI. He then prepared to murder the others before dumping them into a well where he dropped Shawn’s and Morgan’s bodies. Before pushing him into the water source to his apparent death, the pals engage in a brawl.
