With a name like that, it sounds like it should be easy to figure out what it’s about, but any Stephen King fan knows better than it is to anticipate a simple “face-value” connection between the title and the story.
Let’s start with the beginning of the story to set the scene. The short story is about a man who decided to name Lester Billings who visits a psychiatrist because he thinks “The Boogeyman” is trying to scare him by killing his three children.
Each of one‘s deaths had mysterious things going on around them. The guy tells his psychologist, Dr. Harper, that when he put every one of his children to bed on the night they died, they all cried out “Boogeyman.”
He swears that cabinet doors in one‘s rooms have been closed, but when he found their bodies, these same closet doors have always been open. Even though “crib death” and “convulsions” were listed as the official reasons for their deaths, he thinks that Boogeyman was indeed the real cause.
Lester, as well as his wife, move to a town far away just after the deaths of their first two children. His wife gets pregnant quickly, and he and she take extra steps to protect their new son, Andy. But she has to go help a sick family member, leaving this same man to take care of their young child by himself.
When she isn’t there, he starts to feel The Boogeyman getting stronger and more dangerous, and he worries for his life. For the very first time since Andy was born, he puts him inside a separate bedroom because he knows the creature will pursue him.

All of them died of what seemed to be natural causes. The children all yelled “Boogeyman” before those who died, and the office door popped open after being shut.
Later, the family relocates to a town and bears another child. After that, the man’s wife tends to leave to start taking her mother’s care. When his family moves, the unknown thing that killed his other children follows them and kills the new baby.
The father tells the psychiatrist this, and the doctor tells him to keep coming in just for counseling. As the father walks away, he seems to see the psychiatrist take off a mask, showing that he is the “Boogeyman” who killed his children.
From the logline, it makes it sound like the movie won’t be as dark as the collection of short stories, but the same themes will still be there. Instead of killing the kids, it looks like the Boogeyman will kill one‘s mother.
In the short story, most of what happens are told to the reader, but in the movie, we can see how the characters react. Due to the movie’s longer length, we will probably see more of how the family tries to get let go of the Boogeyman.
