The Buccaneers Season 2 Storyline:
After seeing their friend Conchita’s hurried wedding to Lord Richard Marable, the American nouveau riche girls of the Elmsworth and St. George families go to England to find spouses.
Lizzy Elsmworth and Jinny St. George are debutantes who join London society. Despite the disapproval of Richard’s family, they are both drawn to James, Richard’s younger brother. Guy Thwarte, a bachelor, is captivated by Jinny’s sister Nan’s eccentric behavior.
So as not to ruin Jinny’s plans to be married, Nan is taken on an exploration of Cornwall after Jinny unintentionally tells her that she is secretly an illegitimate child. As they swim together, Nan encounters Theo, a duke who is looking for a woman who will marry him regardless of his social standing.
In Runnymede, Conchita hosts a home party for her and Richard’s acquaintances. Rejecting Jinny, James joins Lizzy on the dance floor. Mabel comes dangerously close to kissing Honoria when they play sardines.
James has Lizzy undress in front of him, making her feel embarrassed. Richard tells Conchita she won’t ever fit in, and Conchita hears him and runs away. Guy departs when Nan tells him her parents’ names. Nan receives a proposal from Theo.
Patricia St. George hosts a magnificent celebration to honor her girls’ successful courtships when they reach New York, but Nan rejects her and says she will tell Theo the truth. In an effort to get some answers, Nan approaches her father.
In the meanwhile, Theo reads a drunken telegram that Guy sent to Nan, in which he confesses his love. Mabel is seen kissing a maid by Lavinia Elmsworth, and Conchita is worried that she and Richard won’t be able to leave the Brightlingseas.
Patricia and Nan make up, and Patricia tells Nan that she is really her daughter. A hasty marriage is what Theo wants from Nan. The end of their marriage is announced by Patricia to her husband.
The arrival of an entourage of American ladies in London in the 1870s was a major event. They caused quite a sensation with their unconventional practices, which ran counter to the city’s more conventional norms.
They brought with them a collision of civilizations due to the radical differences between their ways of life and the conventional wisdom of Britain.
In 1995, the BBC transformed this fascinating story of cultural collision into a television miniseries that highlighted the conflicts and contrasts between the long-established customs of London society and these American immigrants.
The world that the Buccaneers transport us to is one where aspirations clash with ancient secrets and wealth and power intersect. The story, which takes place in the 1870s, is about a band of daring American girls who attack the halls of London’s upper class during the traditional social season.
They are both a welcome breath of fresh air and a source of consternation in a culture mired in traditions that date back millennia. What was their task? In order to get spouses and get titles.
The pursuit of “I do”s masks a universe of unconventional hopes, wishes, and ambitions. Marriage, for these buccaneers, is only the beginning of a thrilling journey that will shake society to its foundations.
More than simply cultural clashes are in store for these courageous young ladies as they bravely cross the perilous waters of London’s elite. It’s a clash of principles, expectations, and, most significantly, emotions.
While old-world propriety is besieged by the unstoppable forces of change, The Buccaneers allow us to watch a dance among tradition or revolt with each planned step and impulsive jump. It is summarized here:
