The Young Pope Season 3 Storyline:

In the second season, The Young Pope evolved into The New Pope, with Jude Law’s Pope Pius XII, Lenny Belardo (John Malkovich), passing away into a coma in the season finale, and John Malkovich’s John Brannox becoming Pope John Paul III.

Lenny’s misaligned appearance in the finale led to this. The Young Pope suggests a number of reasons why the fall occurred, albeit these are not completely explained in the program.

Pius’ poor diet is first, as seen by his preference for cherry Coke Zero between meals. As suggested in the HBO series, he could possibly have a valid heart ailment.

Usually, the assault starts when he scans the throng in Venice and spots two gruff-looking hippies who could or might not be his real parents. Lenny’s mother abandoned him in a facility when he was a small child, as we previously knew in the season, when he traveled from America to Venice.

Regardless of whether they’re his parents or not, it is never said that he has a keen eye. He thinks of his mother and father when he sees these two, or maybe Lenny is experiencing a vision as a result of his cardiac arrest.

The New Pope viewers are curious as to what happened to Sister Mary, Lenny’s tutor (for entertainment, see Diane Keaton’s The Young Pope).

He introduced an organization to the Vatican that this lady worked for. The first season’s finale further explains this. In that episode, Pius sent her to Africa.

One of the main stories of The Young Pope depends on Sister Mary. We watch him do miracles in the often surreal recurrences of the drama, which leads Sister Mary feel that the Pope is a real saint whom it is her duty to defend.

This has implications for The New Pope since “Saint Pius” has developed a cult of cliques since he entered a coma, which is problematic for the Vatican or Brannox in particular.

The Young Pope, released in 2017, was a fictitious account of Pope Pius XIII, the first American pope, during his turbulent early years. Lenny is a chain-smoking papal bull in a Vatican china shop, arriving unconventionally as an American and one who is unusually young for the position. He upends power players’ behind-the-scenes political maneuvering while alienating followers with an agenda of hardline Catholic beliefs.

It’s interesting to note that although though Law is being hailed as a co-star in The New Pope, details regarding his potential role revival were previously kept just as a mystery as Malkovich’s character.

This implies that Law’s part might range from a series recurring to a brief appearance, resulting in Malkovich’s character’s elevation to the pope.

HBO’s tweet regarding Malkovich’s hiring, which included the phrase “welcome to the papacy,” which seems to reveal the character’s fate, served to emphasize this point.

Pope Pius XIII is still in a coma after nine months and numerous unsuccessful heart transplants, yet he has gained a cult following & is regarded as a saint by many. In order to keep Pius XIII from turning into a false idol, Voiello determines a new pope has to be chosen, following the suggestion of Bauer, the Holy See’s Ambassador.

He and his friends vote strategically to defeat his opponent, Cardinal Hernández, after realizing the papal conclave would not choose him. Instead, they choose the polite Cardinal Viglietti, a devoted follower of Francis of Assisi, in an effort to influence him indirectly. Viglietti quickly adjusts to his position of authority after taking the name Pope Francis II.

He introduces radical charitable reforms to the church and orders the College of Cardinals to give up their possessions. He also orders the Vatican to provide refuge to large numbers of refugees.

The changes and Viglietti’s desire to defrock Voiello led to a scheme by the latter on Hernández to have Sir John Brannox, who had the third-highest vote total, take his place.

The death of Pope Francis II from what seems to be a heart attack is alleged to have been planned by Bauer. After being in a coma for months, Pope Pius XIII ultimately moves his finger.

Before the papal conclave votes, Voiello, Assente, Gutiérrez, Aguirre, & Sofia fly to England to meet with Brannox and persuade him to accept the position of pope. Brannox, a member of the British nobility and a supporter of John Henry Newman, is well-known in the church for converting Anglicans to Catholicism and for a theological book he wrote in his youth called The Middle Way.

After Francis II’s passing and the condition of Pius XIII, the cardinals are certain that this centrist doctrine would bring order back to the Vatican.

The party is taken to their beds after arriving at the Brannox mansion, where each one (together with Brannox) senses the presence of Pius XIII. Tomas, Sofia’s husband, meets with Cardinal Spalletta and the Italian Minister of Finance and the Economy at the Vatican. Spalletta claims that since he is aware of Brannox’s one and only secret, he will be able to manage Brannox.

The next morning, Voiello meets with Brannox, who tells that his old parents don’t ever visit him because they blame him for the loss of his twin, Adam, whom they grieve every day.

They reside in a different wing. The party is surprised by Brannox’s oddity and candor, but they decide to choose him after hearing more about the cardinal’s worldview during a later supper.

They are told by Brannox that he will make a decision in the morning. An anti-Christian message from an unidentified Islamic caliphate is displayed on a television at the Vatican before it shuts off.

Several senior cardinals, worried about the Pope’s drastic reforms to the church, hatch a plot to attempt to rein him in and prevent him from implementing further, more harmful reforms.

In retaliation, the pope publicly denounces many cardinals and appoints the nun who cared for him as his top advisor, Sister Mary, who had been an orphan.

Similarly, he has threatened to seize the whole wealth of many religious groups, most notably the Franciscans, should they refuse to submit to his absolute authority. After this, the pope orders the return of the papal tiara from a museum to the Vatican so he may wear it as his crown.

The cardinals meet with Italy’s prime minister in a last-ditch attempt to control the pope, but the pope ends up bullying the prime minister and threatening an antiquated papal process that would let the church dictate who Italians should vote for in municipal elections.

Now that we know the pope isn’t attempting to revive the Papal States, our worst fears have been dashed: he’s depressed and wants to face his parents, who left him when he was a child.
