The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, confirmed Tuesday the discovery of a tunnel used to transport drugs between that country and the United States.
The pipeline stretched between the cities of Tijuana and San Diego, and his finding had been announced last Sunday on Twitter by the US president, Donald Trump. "Mexico must take control of this great problem!"The president of the neighboring country tweeted last Sunday.
For his part, the Mexican president agreed with Trump and explained that the two governments are collaborating so that the transport of drugs comes to an end.
"What President Trump mentioned it is true and there is cooperation between the two governments to prevent the continued transportation of drugs to the United States. in this way and with all the vigilance that is being carried out ”, stated AMLO in his daily press conference.
"We have all the elements, all the evidence, we know what happened and how we acted, and there is cooperation and it will continue to exist ... with the United States government," said the president.
López Obrador did not offer details about the finding, but last Friday the foundation Judicial Watch reported that US authorities had found a 600-meter tunnel in April in a warehouse in the Californian city of San Diego., a few meters from a busy port of entry for Customs and Border Protection (CBP, for its acronym in English).
According to the authorities, before the increased surveillance in the border area, of about 3,100 km, the drug traffickers have been given the task of build this type of steps and use drainage systems designed to prevent flooding.
For his part, the Mexican chancellor, Marcelo Ebrard, announced that the US authorities are "reviewing" the diplomatic note that Mexico sent a week ago to ask for the information of the operative Fast and Furious.
According to the chancellor, there are doubts about the operation carried out from 2009 to 2011 by the Agency for Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), which introduced more than 2,000 high-caliber weapons to Mexico to track drug traffickers.
"There will surely be an answer, they have already told us, of cooperation with Mexico in this investigation."Added the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE).
The operative has attracted the attention of the country because it was managed under the administration of Felipe Calderón (2006-2012), where Genaro García Luna was Secretary of Public Security. Luna has been detained since December in the US, as he was accused of receiving bribes from the Sinaloa Cartel.
Ebrard added that this diplomatic note seeks that Washington provide information about the weapons used in the operation, the monitoring of the weapons not recovered in Mexico and the testimonies of those involved.
"There are two: or lied to the Congress of the Union and to Mexican society by the authorities of Mexico, saying that nothing of this was known, O well, ran over, Mexico's national sovereignty was violated"He declared.
On the other hand, Mexico and the United States agreed on March 20 restrictions on “non-essential” land traffic at the border to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus, but without affecting trade.
The term of said agreement will expire this Wednesday, without giving details so far about the reopening of non-essential crossings from Mexico to the United States by land.
The commercial exchange between Mexico and the United States, partners together with Canada in a regional free trade agreement in force since 1994, reached 576,777 million dollars in 2019. The northern country is the main destination for exports.
