In the beginning of the tale, Billy and his pals take on Jesse Evans and the evil men from the Santa Fe Ring. As a result of the ensuing conflict, the Lincoln County War broke out. Billy fights to maintain his integrity and his relationship with the passion of his life among the mayhem.

When violence escalates to shooting, the struggle becomes the horrific Lincoln County War. Billy will have to battle for his own soul and the woman he loves. Billy McCarty & his Irish immigrant family are forced to leave New York & go west in search of better possibilities when Billy is 12 years old. But for some, the trip ends in tragedy.
Continue their trip to Santa Fe with Kathleen and her boys. She has a tough life but stumbles upon a guy she thinks would make it easier, only to discover that he really makes things much more difficult. In an effort to start again, Antrim, Kathleen, & the two sons go to Silver City. But their hopes are dashed as Billy ends up with nothing.
