Japanese industrialist Rokuro Okajima, better known as Rock, is the story’s protagonist. He chose to leave his job as a salaryman and become a member of the organization after an event between his firm and the Black Lagoon pirate mercenary organization. The fictitious Thai town of Roanapur is the epicentre of the mercenary group’s operations and where much of the action unfolds.
He is one of four members of the group. Revy, the gunslinger & famous “Two-Hands”; Dutch, the captain with experience in the US Navy; and Benny, the navigator and electronics specialist. As a member of The Lagoon Company, Rock had to adapt to a new life in a city teeming with mercenaries and mafias while working with his colleagues.
Rokuro “Rock” Okajima is a 25-year-old Tokyo-based salaryman for Asahi Industries in the mid-1990s. The Lagoon Company, a band of pirates and mercenaries that smuggle commodities in Southeast Asian waters, and the crew of the Elco-type PT boat Black Lagoon kidnap him one day.
Members of the gang include Dutch, an African-American who was once a U.S. Navy patrol boat crewman; Revy, a Chinese-American who is the team’s primary marksman; and Benny, a Jewish-American who dropped out of college but now works as a mechanic, computer expert, and researcher.
Rock chooses to join the team when his department leader leaves him and declares him dead. Rock may be a pirate today, but he’s still got the chops and the good vibes to act as the team’s mediator and “professional” representative.
Pirates, thieves, and members of the Japanese yakuza, Chinese triad, Russian and Italian mafias, and Colombian cartels all call the made-up town of Roanapur, Thailand, home.

Starting in 2001 with the issue of Monthly Sunday Gene-X magazine, Rei Hiroe wrote and drew the manga series Black Lagoon. The Lagoon Company is an organization of pirate mercenaries who operate in the Southeast Asian and neighboring waters during the 1990s. They smuggle commodities and contraband. As a smuggling ring, the Black Lagoon is the group’s main tool.
Criminal businesses in the region regularly hire the Lagoon Company for missions that include high-speed chases, gunfights, or boat warfare.
From Rokuro Okajima, a salaryman who is abducted and chooses to join the Lagoon Company, to Revy, an infamous sadist who takes care of most of the group’s fighting requirements, each of the four members throughout the Lagoon Company are the core of the story.
Unfortunately, there have been a number of setbacks with the manga’s publishing, and the series has taken many breaks. The series had a first break in May of 2010 and didn’t resume until February of 2013.
Unfortunately, the series took another hiatus in February 2014, thus its resurrection was for nothing. May 2017 saw the manga’s return after a nearly three-year absence, while September 2018 saw its return to hiatus.
On Sundays of each month, Gene-X teased that the show will be back in the early months of 2019. The manga, however, resumed in September 2019 after a postponement, and new chapters are still being released occasionally until this day.
