Beginning tonight (May 2) on ITV, the brand-new crime thriller DI Ray will feature Parminder Nagra as the eponymous Birmingham-based police investigator.
The series also has a strong pedigree in the production department thanks to the fact that it was conceived by Maya Sondhi, who played Maneet Bindra in Line of Duty, and that the king of thrillers, Jed Mercurio, is an executive producer.
The show centers on Rachita Ray, a police woman from Leicester who “requires on a case that forces her to confront a lifelong personal conflict between her British identity & her South Asian heritage,” according to the series description. Maya Sondhi developed and wrote the British police procedural television show DI Ray, which Jed Mercurio produced.
In the television series DI Ray, Parminder Nagra plays the main character, a Detective Inspector in a fictional Birmingham police department. Jamie Bamber and Gemma Whelan are also cast members.[1]ITV began airing the first four-episode series on May 2, 2022.
A second, six-episode season of the show was ordered in November 2022, and production will start in 2023.[2][3]

DI Ray Season 2 Storyline:
The second season of the new series will continue to take place in Birmingham, but it will follow DI Ray & her colleagues as they investigate the murder of a notorious felon.
While working on the high-profile case, she continues to deal with prejudice and attempt to prevent the city from devolving into a full-blown turf war.
The promotion DI Rachita Ray has been awaiting occurs in the first season when she is invited to join a murder investigation. She learns on her first day that the case she has been given is a “Culturally Specific Homicide.” Rachita feels like a “token appointee,” chosen more for her race than for her abilities, and this makes her heart hurt.
Rachita perseveres in the case because she never backs down from a challenge and is driven to both find the culprit and expose the obvious biases her colleagues contribute to the investigation. And it’s not easy. This is not your usual murder investigation; it involves a risky foray into the world of organized crime.
Rachita is well-deserving of meeting the task, but she wasn’t prepared for the realization that she has spent her whole life hiding a problem with her personal identity.
In fact, she has put in twice as much effort as everyone else. She is unwilling to be Indian; nonetheless, it would have been simpler if she were white.
DI Ray season two could clarify if Ray was jailed because of her position as a DI or because she disregarded the command. The second season of DI Ray will center on her struggle against dishonest senior police officials.
The interaction between Martyn and Ray when she learns who Ray really is will be fascinating. It would be challenging for the producers to maintain the same intensity & plot in DI Ray season 2. It will be interesting to see how the authors handle the narrative for the second season. The second season is expected to be better than the first.

Rachita Ray’s actor, Parminder Nagra, also spoke about the show’s focus on racism and revealed her personal experience. She remarked, “I don’t think we’ve seen much of what’s going on today on television; I can’t think of any examples off off the top of my head. We probably haven’t seen much of these subtleties.”
“I recently traveled someplace for business; despite having been there a total of four times, my name was still spelt incorrectly. The only thing I could say was, “Again, guy!”
When PS Tony Khatri, who had passed away in her arms in Episode 3, was killed, DI Ray had to act quickly in order to discover the perpetrator.
Tragically, Detective Inspector Rachita Ray realized her fiance was complicit in illegal activity together with criminal Marcus Tranter very fast.
At the conclusion of DI Ray, Marcus Tranter was apprehended for the killings of Karl Shaw, Imran Aziz, Anjuli Kapoor, PS Tony Khatri, & Aziz.
DCI Martyn Hunter was held on suspicion of obstructing the administration of justice, causing gross bodily harm, misconduct in public office, planning a murder, and having sex with a minor.
It was unclear if DCI Martyn Hunter would work together to avoid going to prison or face it. Regrettably, DI Rachita Ray’s employment was in jeopardy because of her friendship with Martyn, a colleague.
