While Tim is devout and idealistic, Hawk is charming and ambitious. Through the anti-Vietnam War rallies of the ’60s, the drug-fueled disco scene of the ’70s, and the AIDS epidemic of the ’80s, their love story unfolds.

The next historical romance starring Jonathan Bailey & Matt Bomer already has us drooling. Showtime’s new miniseries “Fellow Travelers,” adapted on Thomas Mallon’s book of the same name, has the dashing performers in a 20th-century Washington, DC setting.

Fellow Travelers Season 2 Storyline:

The plot of Fellow Travelers centers on an affair between two men who couldn’t be more different: the wealthy Hawkins Fuller (Matt Bomer) & the idealistic and devoutly religious Tim Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey).

They begin dating, but the war on “subversives and sexual deviants” recently announced by Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn puts their happiness in jeopardy.

We stick with them over the following four decades as they bump into three other characters: Marcus (Jelani Alladin), Lucy (Allison Williams), & Frankie (Noah J. Ricketts).

At a Washington fundraiser, powerful staffer Hawkins Fuller (American Horror Story’s Matt Bomer) meets ambitious politician Tim Laughlin (Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey), and the chemistry between them is immediate.

It’s 1952, & Republican Senator Joseph McCarthy (For All Mankind’s Chris Bauer) is ready to declare his desire to root out “subversives and sexual deviants” in the United States government.

Over the course of four tumultuous decades including the Vietnam War & the AIDS crisis—Hawk and Tim’s love story is dramatized as they are repeatedly drawn back into one other’s circle.

Ron Nyswaner, the show’s creator and executive producer, has said, “It’s so compelling that there’s a powerful attraction between individuals who see life very differently.”

They aren’t a good match for each other in many aspects, yet they’re nonetheless very attracted to one another. And they’re in a situation where the consequences of giving in to their mutual desire might be catastrophic.

Hawk’s employer, Senator Wesley Smith (Linus Roache of My Policeman), has a daughter named Lucy (Allison Williams of Girls), so Hawk marries Lucy to keep his cover.

When asked to describe their close friendship, Nyswaner says, “Lucy & Hawk share this delicious relationship of knowing each other since childhood.”

It was always assumed that they will be married; what fascinates me regarding Lucy is learning how much she knows or doesn’t know about Hawk. Is there anything we wouldn’t do to be with someone we care about?

Fellow Travelers is a love tale and political thriller, created by Oscar-nominated author Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia) based on Thomas Mallon’s book.

It follows the secret relationship of two very different men that meet in the shadow of McCarthy-era Washington. Bomer portrays the charming Hawkins Fuller, who has found success and wealth in politics from the shadows.

Till he encounters Tim Laughlin (Bailey), a young guy bursting with optimism and religious zeal, Hawkins avoids becoming emotionally involved.

They start dating at the same time that Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn launch their war on “subversives and sexual deviants,” ushering in one of the worst eras in the United States’ history.

We follow Hawk, Tim, Marcus (Alladin), Lucy (Williams), as well as Frankie (Ricketts) over the course of four decades as they deal with external and internal challenges, such as the anti-Vietnam War protests of the ’60s, the drug-fueled disco hedonism of the ’70s, and the AIDS crisis of the ’80s.
