Goodfellas, or GoodFellas, is a 1990 American biographical crime film directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Nicholas Pileggi & Scorsese, with production assistance from Irwin Winkler.
The film is based on Pileggi’s nonfiction book of the same name, published in 1985. The film follows mafia member Henry Hill (Robert De Niro) and his family and close companions (Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Lorraine Bracco, and Paul Sorvino) from 1955 until 1980.
The tone of Martin Scorsese’s latest picture, “GoodFellas,” stayed with me for a few days after I watched it. It was a feeling of shame and remorse for past transgressions, foolish actions that squandered years of one’s life, and broken promises made to those who were once devoted. Nonetheless, there was a sly longing for awful moments that one knew one shouldn’t miss.

Goodfellas 2 Storyline
Wiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family best-selling author Nicholas Pileggi spent four years with the real-life Henry Hill, who vanished into the federal government’s protection of witnesses program after revealing all he knew about the mafia.
The memories are condensed by Pileggi and Scorsese into a fiction that at times serves like a documentary but also contains so much knowledge and feeling regarding the Mafia that it ultimately creates an identical claustrophobic imagining as described by Hill’s wife: the feeling that this mob the world is the real world.
Scorsese is the only one capable of directing this material. To put it simply, he has mastered it. Coming up in New York’s Little Italy as an asthmatic youngster who couldn’t play sports and whose health was too severe to enable him to spend a normal childhood, he was frequently forgotten yet never missed a thing, and this was the defining experience of his life.
Early on in the film, young Henry Hill gazes out the window of his family’s apartment and watches the low-level wise guys in the social club across from him with awe and envy.
He is impressed by their swagger and the fact that they get girls, drive hot cars, have money, and never get tickets from the police, despite having loud parties that last all night.
Instead of Tommy acting on impulse alone and killing Billy Batts, the true murder included James Burke and was more planned out. In actual life, James Burke took over the loan shark operation while Batts was in jail.
James was reluctant to hand over the company to Batts once he came out of prison. Henry’s tavern, The Suite, was the target of James’s first assassination plot. His attackers chose to knife him instead of shooting him.
Goodfellas is not the only representation there has been of Jimmy “the Gent” Burke in pop culture, as he was also represented by John Mahoney in the TV movie The 10 Million Dollar Getaway, Donald Sutherland in the TV movie The Big Heist, & has been included in numerous documentaries and novels.
Jimmy Conway/James Burke was a violent guy with a tangled past, and Goodfellas did a wonderful job of recounting some of his peak moments as seen by one of his closest associates.
Henry Hill, a young boy growing up in a working-class Italian-American neighborhood in Brooklyn in 1955, gets fascinated by the criminal culture and Mafia influence in his community.
He joins up with Irish-American truck hijacker & mobster Jimmy “the Gent” Conway and fellow juvenile offender Tommy DeVito, who all work for local captain Paulie Cicero. After starting off as Jimmy’s fence, Henry moves on to more severe crimes.
The three friends used to spend much of their time in the ’60s partying at the Copacabana nightclub. Karen Friedman, a Jewish lady, gets worried by Henry’s illicit actions when she begins dating him. Henry’s opulent lifestyle has such an effect on her that she agrees to marry him over her parents’ objections.
In 1970, Tommy was a regular customer at a nightclub operated by Henry, and it was there that Tommy and Jimmy brutally murdered Billy Batts, a member of the Gambino crime family who had just been released from jail.
Jimmy, Henry, & Tommy commit an unprosecuted murder, and they bury the corpse in upstate New York to avoid reprisal. But after six months have passed, Jimmy learns that the burial location is slated for construction, so they exhume the decaying body and move it somewhere.
In 1970, Henry watches as Tommy kills Spider, an errand boy, after the two get into an argument over a card game and Tommy taunts Spider. Karen finds Henry has a mistress & threatens his at gunpoint.
After Henry and Jimmy recover a loan from a gambler in Tampa, Henry moved in with his lover, despite Paulie’s insistence that he return to Karen. They are sentenced to 10 years in jail when the gambler’s sister, a FBI typist, gets them in upon their return.
Henry has Karen sneak narcotics into the prison & sell those to a fellow convict who hails from Pittsburgh so that he may send money home to his family.
