Group: Netflix and Hulu Remove “Superior Dungeons and Dragons” Episode

Netflix eliminated one of many fan favourite episodes of Group from its streaming service on Friday, deleting “Superior Dungeons and Dragons” from its number of season 2 episodes. By the corporate’s reasoning, this is because of using blackface within the episode.

Within the episode in query, the controversial incident happens early when the primary characters of the sequence collect to play an absurdly high-stakes sport of Dungeons & Dragons, and the character of Chang (Ken Jeong) arrives carrying pitch black make-up over his pores and skin, a wig of white hair, pointed ears, and contact lenses. The potential poor style and blackface implications of the make-up is straight away identified by the opposite characters with Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown), who's a Lady of Shade, saying, “So we’re simply going to disregard the hate crime, huh?” Chang responds, “I’m a darkish elf or a drow.”

It was the 14th episode of Group Season 2. Whereas Group creator Dan Harmon has remained silent on the choice, Sony Photos Tv, which produced the cult sequence, introduced their “assist” for Netflix and later Hulu’s choice. (Hulu eliminated the episode hours after Netflix.)

This looks as if one of many odder items of media to get “cancelled” contemplating it's deliberately obscure whether or not it counts as blackface, and that ambiguity is a not-so-subtle dig on the inherent racism that exists in a plethora of fantasy fiction, just like the Dungeons & Dragons covers Group was deconstructing, in addition to the many years of such fiction permeating the style. Ever marvel why all of the Orcs have been black and the one males who supported Mordor in Lord of the Rings have been darkish skinned and “from the south,” simply as Africa is south of Britain?
