A baron stays in power with the help of a group of young people called “clippers.” Clippers are warriors who are well-trained and loyal, so they are not allowed to get married or have kids. A regent is in charge of each clipper force.
Outside of the strict order of the barons, there are several groups. Most bandits are nomads. Most of them are lawless murderers who steal from trade convoys between baronies to survive, but some live in clans.
The River King as well as his men run the moisture trade in the Badlands and other places, and they are not involved in the power struggles between the barons.
The Totemists, a religious group of ascetic people who live in small, isolated groups and worship idols, are also shown to live on the edges of society. The Widow leads a group of anti-feudal revolutionaries from her late partner’s barony.
Her peers recognize her as a baron, but they don’t respect her, and she doesn’t respect them either.
We don’t know much about the world outside of the Badlands, but it seems like it is much less politically stable and better for the environment than the Badlands. People think that the utopian city of Azra exists outside of the Badlands, but that most people don’t believe it.
