Detroit-based Dodge Tines is a failed real estate entrepreneur and former athlete. He collapses from a headache and wakes up in the hospital where two medical professionals inform him and his expectant wife Val that they cannot remove the brain tumor.
A nurse sends him a business card for Trio Fund, a group that purports to assist people who are terminally sick but are having financial difficulties.
When Dodge arrives to Tiro Fund, Miles Sellars greets him and offers him a deal: for the next 24 hours, Dodge will be the “prey” of five “hunters” who will attempt to murder him. In return, he will get money sent to his savings account every hour he lives, with the sums increasing each hour until he receives $24.5 million.
Miles also provides the guidelines: Once the game has begun, Dodge cannot stop it or pause it, he cannot reveal to anyone that he is playing, as he are unable to leave the city. If he disregards these guidelines, the game will continue until he passes away.
Dodge first turns down the offer, but eventually chooses to accept it because he wants to leave Val and their kid with a stable financial future. With the exception of his prescription medicine, a sonogram of his kid, & a phone Miles provides him to monitor his whereabouts, Dodge’s possessions are taken by Miles before the game begins at 6:46 AM at a restaurant. The phone will notify the hunters of his present position for 15 seconds each hour.
The game starts, and Dodge eventually encounters and avoids the five hunters: Nixon, a British gentleman who strictly adheres to the regulations of the hunt; Reagan, a southern cowboy; Carter, a psychologist who monitors Dodge’s profile to predict his next move; Kennedy, an expert in martial arts; and LBJ, an older man. Connell, one of Miles’ deputies in charge of observing Dodge from the streets & clearing up after the game, also runs into Dodge.

When she phones the police, they are powerless to make a report of a missing individual. Later, Val discovers the Tiro Fund card, but the business’s office is deserted.
When Dodge attempts to return home, his wife notices him, but Carter pursues him. Dodge uses a cinderblock to murder Carter after a pursuit. Dodge’s pal Looger locates him, but when Nixon pursues them, Dodge flees.

Nixon is about to murder Dodge by slashing his hand, when he notices the sun rising, puts his gun aside, and kindly assists Dodge in standing up again.
Before leaving, Nixon thanks him for an excellent game. As Val and Dodge reconnect, Miles calls Dodge to let him understand that he has won both the game & the prize money. Miles gets a fresh file on the next victim.
