If the movie keeps following Mia, it may go in any number of directions. The continuation diverged drastically from the source material. After a lengthy courtship, Mia here weds Michael, the brother of her closest friend. Michael from the first film, portrayed by Robert Schwartzman, is not in the second.
Chris Pine replaced the original actor cast for Lord Nicholas Devereaux, Mia’s love interest & heir to the kingdom of Genovia. At the conclusion of the film, Mia changed the law that said a monarch must be married in order to take the throne of Genovia. Nicholas proposed to Mia, and Queen Clarisse (Julie Andrews) asked Joe to be her bodyguard.
Different aspects of Mia’s rule from her grandmother’s might be examined in a third film. More sleepover parties as an update on Mia’s romantic life would be expected from a third film, should one be made.
