In essence, it was an 80s remake. In an old home, there was drywall, breadboard, & MDF all the things I detest. I began by disassembling it and rebuilding it.
For eight years! Until she came to this endeavor, Nicole believed she could do any task. I thought remodeling this tiny lake cottage would be easy when I bought it, she remarked.
“I had no idea that the property I prevented from being demolished would need eight years to finish. Because I knew I would retain this cottage forever, I was quite frightened of making a mistake.
The second summer after she had acquired the home, Nicole & Bobby Prothero, her main builder and collaborator, began their collaboration.
After that, life dealt them both a curveball. Nicole said that she wanted to stay with her grandparents since their health was deteriorating. “Bobby longed to be with Tessa, his daughter, who was receiving cancer treatment.
The lake home wasn’t a priority for us since there was plenty going on. But the lake home has now officially passed the finish line thanks to the assistance of my team.
Just 700 square feet were occupied by the cottage when Nicole bought it. She raised the home, dug up the ground, laid a new foundation, built a first floor, a basement, and get ready for this took the old cottage and turned it into the second and third floors of the house to provide additional room.
“I took the original house or jacked it up 15 feet in the air so I could construct a brand-new basement on first-floor level before putting the original cottage back onto the new at first floor,” Nicole said.
All the original qualities were what attracted Nicole to this property, she noted. The most spectacular feature of the home, in my opinion, must be the opening door to my master bedroom.
Most people would remove it and replace it with a genuine door, but a hatch is better, so why bother? The ceiling’s collar ties and the recycled fir wall planks, all of which are more than 100 years old, are complemented by the room’s stunning roof the boards, which were found after tearing off the drywall.
Nicole has a place to unwind when the home is crowded thanks to the porch off the bedroom and the new skylights & windows that lighten the area. “My bedroom on the third floor is now this lovely sanctuary,” she remarked.
Nicole used additional imagination while creating the cottage. As an example, she turned an old boat into a bed for the room of her sons. She compared it to constructing Noah’s ark in the smallest room imaginable. Nicole also used a door that her son Ethan had painted when he was little at their previous home.
She even constructed an idyllic treehouse outdoors, replete with skylights, an eye-catching red paint, and a pulley and rope system for bringing objects up from the surface in an old wooden bucket. Everything was repurposed, including the windows, an antler from Ethan’s grandpa, and the oak flooring.
Nicole shows the audience where she likes to shop for hip and unusual home goods, Eastern Market, but she also lets on that she has been hoarding architectural elements for the cottage in particular, including a stained-glass window she refers to as “the shining piece in my bedroom.”
A vintage gold and white fireplace mantle she had in preservation, which had to be cleaned of years of paint before being placed in the living room, was another wonderful addition.
