Catherine Sloper is a timid and plain young lady living in Washington Square in 1849 New York City with her affluent father, Dr. Austin Sloper.

After the passing of Catherine’s lovely and accomplished mother, her father is often let down by Catherine’s lack of social graces. When Lavinia Penniman, Catherine’s aunt, comes in, she offers that she assist Catherine in developing her social abilities.

Catherine meets the dashing and attractive Morris Townsend during a party. Catherine is aggressively pursued by Morris, who is supported by Aunt Penniman, and she falls in affection for him right away.

Dr. Sloper believes Morris is a wealth seeker, but Catherine agrees to marry him despite his fears. In an appointment with Morris’ sister, which Dr. Sloper sets up, Morris’ sister confirms his suspicions about Morris’ motivations. Dr. Sloper declines Morris’ official request for Catherine’s hand in marriage.

Despite her father’s objections, Catherine is devastated since she still thinks she can wed Morris using her fortune. If she marries absent his approval, Dr. Sloper forewarns, she will forfeit her inheritance.

Morris persuades Catherine to wait for Dr. Sloper’s consent and accepts a plan in which they would elope if they decide to be married after spending six months overseas.

Morris routinely pays Catherine and Dr. Sloper a visit when they are in Europe, and Aunt Penniman encourages him to do so. When Catherine returns, they decide to elope, but Dr. Sloper is upset to learn of Morris’ actions while he was away. Catherine is extremely upset by his dismissal of her lack of charm & talents.

Dr. Sloper exits the room, and Catherine discovers Morris waiting outdoors in the rain for her. Morris informs her about their upcoming elopement as she rushes to him in excitement.

Catherine, though, is adamant on leaving that evening. She declines Morris’ request to leave a note for her father, saying she now knows he hates her.

They must not anticipate receiving any financial assistance from Catherine’s father, she insists. While Catherine is unaware, Morris’ excitement starts to fade. They parted ways and made plans to reunite around 12:30 a.m.

While Catherine waits, Aunt Penniman offered to stay with her while she packs her things. Catherine becomes more worried as more time goes by without Morris showing up. When she learns she won’t get her father’s money, she soon understands Morris has abandoned her.

Dr. Sloper announced shortly after that he was passing away. He was first pleased with Catherine for refusing Morris, but after learning the truth, he became angry with her. He considers revising his will, but eventually finds it difficult to leave his only kid out.

Years later, Catherine and her aunt are still residing in the Washington Square home. Catherine receives word from Aunt Penniman that Morris has arrived back from California. Catherine is first hesitant, but she ultimately consents to see him.

Now penniless, Morris makes an effort to win Catherine back. Morris comes back to get her, but Catherine won’t allow him in. He bangs frantically on the door while she turned off the lights & retires to bed.
