The University Hospital of Nuevo León registered an outbreak of 23 cases of COVID-19 among its medical, nursing and quarterly staff. This after the visit of a relative to a patient who was in the internal medicine area.
During the daily update of COVID-19 cases in Nuevo León, the director of the University Hospital, Edelmiro Pérez, He explained that it was Thursday when a patient received a visit from a relative to an area not related to the virus. Then, through testing, he discovered he was infected with COVID-19.
Given this, the University Hospital proceeded to carry out 133 tests for the entire Internal Medicine area, detecting 23 cases of coronavirus.
"We sampled all asymptomatic or symptomatic personnel in the area of internal medicine and we detected 23 positive people among nurses, residents, doctors and secretary, All these personnel had to isolate themselves from the institution for proper management, ”said the director.
Pérez Rodríguez assured that this it was the second time that something similar happened, since in past weeks an asymptomatic case with a hip fracture came in. "The patient came without any symptoms of COVID, he just had a fever spike, we did PCR, he tested positive and we took him to the COVID area."
However, that time there were no infected people, unlike the report this Saturday.
Therefore, the director indicated that from now on, visits to the hospital will no longer be face-to-face, and family members will now receive information through a video call, to avoid hospitalized patients being at risk of being infected with COVID-19 and another outbreak to recur.
In addition to the 23 confirmed cases, the University Hospital noted that There are more than 100 suspects in health personnel, because they had contact with one of the sick.
Of the cases, seven are resident physicians (two for internal medicine, one for pediatrics, one for gastro and three for neurosurgery), a secretary, a technician, 10 nurses, three quartermaster and a stretcher-bearer.
"I want to take advantage of the space to comment that if there are nurses who require work, there is work at the University Hospital, if there are emergency doctors, there is work at the University Hospital," he added.
Regarding the capacity of the hospital, Pérez Rodríguez explained that currently There is 90% of the 500 beds that can be counted. There are 200 beds called non-census or transit, which serve for patient observation, while for the covid building, they have 54 beds for critically ill patients without intubation and 18 for intensive care, of which 25 are occupied.
For his part, the entity's health secretary, Manuel de la O Cavazos, assured that the government of Nuevo León will support the University Hospital with all the necessary resources.
