Reptile (Movie) Storyline:
Homicide investigator Tom Nichols (Del Toro) is investigating the stabbing murder of a real estate agent at a model house. The victim’s boyfriend and coworker, Will (Timberlake), who she had a fight with the night before, found her corpse.
The victim’s husband of a few years ago, Karl Glusman, is suspected of being a drug dealer. Also, a strange guy (Michael Pitt) who has it in for Will & his family for some reason becomes disturbingly invested in the case.
Tom and his wife Judy (Silverstone) are relatively new residents of Scarborough, Maine; yet, they are certain that everyone involved has a reason. Tom’s police partner in Philadelphia was doing time for many felonies, so the pair had been residing there.
Real estate agents Will Grady and Summer Elswick discover Summer’s gruesome murder in the remote Maine home they were marketing. Will told Tom Nichols and Dan Cleary, the police detectives investigating the matter, that he wanted to marry Summer but couldn’t since she was still officially wed to Sam Gifford.
They let him go now. Security video from the area reveals a black automobile without a hubcap, which Dan first labels as a 1990 Buick LeSabre but is subsequently accurately identified as a Chrysler Imperial by Tom’s wife Judy.
Will, speaking to Tom after Summer’s burial, reveals that a guy called Eli Phillips had attempted to break into his mother’s home a few nights before.
He reveals that while his father was in charge of the family real estate business, they had illegally acquired Eli’s land. When Eli’s father took his own life, he felt responsible and blamed Will’s family.
Eli blames Will for killing Summer when questioned by Tom and Dan. He also admits to doing some personal research on Tom, demonstrating that he is aware of the corruption issue that involved his old colleague back when they both worked for a Philadelphia precinct.
Sam’s DNA was detected in the semen recovered from inside of Summer during the postmortem. This corroborates the claim of Summer’s acquaintance that the couple surreptitiously met up at the homes she was showing to continue their affair.
After getting a warrant, Tom goes back to Sam’s. Sam takes Dan’s gun & is killed by Tom as he tries to escape. The police searched his home and discovered 13 kg of heroin.
The police have concluded that Sam, who has now died, murdered Summer, but Tom is reluctant to call the matter closed. Eli unexpectedly visits him late at night and hands him a flash drive with proof that Summer was involved in a narcotics money laundering plot involving the Gradys. Planting narcotics on property and then seizing it via civil asset forfeiture.
The Gradys, using a front firm named White Fish, quickly acquired the homes at a low price. Summer was killed because someone didn’t want her to tell the DEA about the scam.
Grant Singer, Benjamin Brewer, & Benicio Del Toro wrote the script for their original film, Reptile. Del Toro has worked in the industry for a long time, but this is his first script for a full-length feature film.
“Following the brutal murder of a young real estate agent, a hardened detective sets out to find the truth in a case where nothing is as it seems, and in doing so, he dismantles the illusions in his own life.”
A tough investigator investigates the gruesome death of a young real estate agent in a case where appearances are deceiving. This causes him to shatter his own self-deception.
To quote Del Toro himself, “I liked the unpredictability,” the film’s director stated of the story. To to the author, “There were a couple of what I like to call ‘Oh, shit’ instances that also compelled me to get involved.”
Actor Justin Timberlake, who plays the lover of the murdered woman, shared Del Toro’s sentiments. Like a good book or thrilling thriller, “I wanted to get to the conclusion as quickly as possible,” he remarked. To to the actor: “I liked the idea of portraying a character who has to constantly respond to the unpredictable nature of what’s thrown in his direction.”
Neither the plot nor the events shown in this film are based on actual occurrences. It’s obvious that it’s fiction, and the manner it’s been presented raises serious concerns about its veracity.
This is so because of the compelling storyline and excellent acting shown throughout. Del Toro, the film’s director and writer, co-created the film’s original and successful premise with Benjamin Brewer. The film’s events, turns, riddles, and characters are all completely made up.
