With lots of horrifying news about the Saw sequel, Saw XI is officially in the works, pushing the boundaries of sequels in a genre renowned for its excessive quantities of follow-ups.
Reviving the stale series, 2023’s Saw X went back to the formula that made the first Saw so beloved, rather than focusing on the sequels.
Looks like Saw XI will have the same tone as the last Saw film, which was a realistic thriller starring John Kramer. The long-running horror brand got its hope back with the release of Saw X earlier this year. Just how? Through prominently featuring the legendary Tobin Bell as John Kramer.
He returned with a bang in this film, which included some of the most horrific traps ever seen as well as an unexpected appearance in the middle of the credits.

Saw 11 Storyline:
Tobin Bell, who had played the part of John Kramer in previous “Saw” films, reprised his role in the tenth film as Jigsaw, the controversial self-improvement guru and serial torture-contraption maker.
The 81-year-old comedian, who made his acting debut in 2004’s “Saw,” reprised his lead role in the most recent installment, which spanned the years between the first two films in the series and followed Kramer as he sought therapy for a brain tumor, crossed the border, and fought back against a ring of healthcare con artists.
Amanda Young, Jigsaw’s apprentice, played by Shawnee Smith, was also back. The film was directed by Kevin Greutert, who started out with “Saw” as an editor and went on to oversee the sixth & seventh installments.
Although Greutert hinted to a sequel in an interview with The Director’s Cut: A DGA Podcast that took place three weeks ago, he said, “There’s a version that takes up directly where the current one leaves off,” stating that it is much too early to tell. Considering it’s scheduled to premiere in cinemas in nine months, it’s likely no longer considered early.
I mean, come on, have these films ever tried anything new? Everyone knows why they purchase a ticket, so we aren’t expecting anything from top-tier dramas here.
We were hoping for more investigation into John’s background and the reasons for his transformation into the notorious Jigsaw, given that Saw X delves into his battle with illness at an earlier point in the chronology.
According to certain fan theories, a potential sequel to Saw may focus on a knockoff Jigsaw instead than John Kramer. Even if this has been used in Spiral before, there is always room to grow this concept, maybe with a few imitators. A Jigsaw cult may even be possible if they’re taking an even more aggressive approach.
A producer inquired whether the sequence during the credits serves as a setup for a Saw film starring Hoffman, and the answer was “yes.” Oren Koules and myself are skeptics so we don’t discuss any other films until this one comes out, Burg said.
However, if the box office returns a positive result for this film and Lionsgate decides to produce another one, that is precisely the direction we will take it.
One thing that Koules mentioned was that Jigsaw always seemed to be light years ahead of everyone else. The fact that he has been interacting with Inspector Hoffman for quite some time is one of the techniques we want to demonstrate in this film.
“So when he’s been one step ahead of everyone and knows what they’re up to, it’s a nice trick for fans to notice that he’s been chatting with Detective Hoffman much earlier than we saw him in the movies before.”
Despite the widespread belief that Hoffman passed away after Saw 3D, the series is notorious for its non-linear plot, with Saw X traveling across time to reveal more about Kramer’s origins. Thus, it’s possible that Saw 11 may explore Hoffman’s role as Kramer’s apprentice further.
The plot of Saw XI takes place at a far earlier point in the series than movies like Spiral, suggesting that the next Saw film may follow an approach comparable to Saw X.
On the other hand, Saw XI’s storyline may guide a sequel, picking up where Spiral left off in the chronology. If this is true, the Saw X post-credits sequence may have set the stage for the story to center on one or more of John Kramer’s apprentices after his death. To be sure, reviewers and fans alike have praised the series’ return to its literal and metaphorical origins.
