Silas, 15, and Shane, 10, are Nancy Botwin’s only children, and they live with her in the made-up Los Angeles suburb of Agerstic. Judah, Nancy’s husband, went away from a heart attack while running with his younger son a few months ago.
In order to support her upper-middle-class lifestyle, Nancy sells marijuana. She appreciated it at first because of her late husband’s income.
The song “Little Boxes” by Malvina Reynolds, which contrasts suburban residents living the consumerist American dream, is played throughout the opening credits of the program.
