In Kitty Green’s (The Assistant) newest film, The Royal Hotel, we tag along with two young American ladies as they travel around Australia. To supplement their income, they accept bartending positions at the eponymous Royal Hotel. When the sexist customers get more angry, however, things take a turn for the worst for the two ladies.

The Royal Hotel (2023) Storyline:
The suspense is progressively built up, much as in “Wake in Fright,” another Green composition. At first, the noise level caused by everyone’s inebriation seems excessive.
Carelessness led to the shattering of a glass. It was meant to be funny, but it was really rather harsh. A distant firework illuminated the darkness. She packs the frame with smiling people who are moving about and having fun by drinking and making jokes. But the scenario is becoming more dangerous over time.
There was a big, intoxicated guy standing in the corridor, peering down the hallway at them. The insult was as sharp as a sword and meant to hurt deep.
A chair is flung with threatening, controlled violence. As the number of people in the frame increases, so does the menace and violence of their laughing and actions.
Green is a master of slow-burn suspense and does a fantastic job of constructing the social economy of this society, but not every character succeeds.
Garner, Weaving, Yovich, & Wallace all provide nuance to their characters’ psyches via subtle physical gestures and knowing glances. Unfortunately, Hennwick’s Liv never fully reveals her motivations.
She makes a series of horrible choices, but the film never really focuses on her (apart from a statement regarding Australia becoming the furthest distant she could go from her home), so none of it really registers. It’s never really made clear how or why Hanna and Liv became friends.

Hanna is hesitant to take the job, but Liv assures her that they need the money. When Hanna and Liv land in the Western Australian town not far from Perth, Carol picks them up and takes guests to the Royal Hotel. Two English ladies, whose jobs Hanna and Liv are taking over, are waiting for them at the pub.
After that, Hanna and Liv meet the pub’s proprietor, Billy, who promptly provides them with training. While the two are getting used to their new secluded environment, they find that the bar’s regulars may be somewhat overpowering.
Hanna begins to have second thoughts about taking the job as customers make sexual attempts and derogatory remarks about her and Liv. A bar client named Matty had made some crude remarks about her, but she gradually warmed up to him.
After the pub closes one night, Hanna and Liv’s upstairs bedroom becomes the target of a frightening customer named Dolly, and Hanna becomes fearful for their safety.
Hanna attempts to persuade Liv to get out of the hotel since the males keep objectifying them and endangering their safety. However, Billy is a drunk who is unable to properly manage the pub.
He is unhappy that Hanna and Liv ignore and don’t interact with the bar clients. Liv, however, is adamant on remaining for a few more weeks to earn more cash so that they may continue their backpacking trip. Meanwhile, Liv develops feelings for Teeth, a stoic customer at the bar who seems really kind and nice.
